STORING BANANA TREES?

i have 3 banana trees that was dug up for the winter. they are currently being stored in my house in an empty bedroom, and with that is a horrible dirts smell...i need to occupy that room for my daughter, so i was wanting to store them outside in my detached garage, is this ok to do if i maybe wrap a quilt or something around the root dirt ball to keep warm? please help!
