Spanish- Difference between imperfect and preterite.?

hi there(: i have a test tomorrow in sp. cl and i need to be able to write if something is imperfect or preterite and i don't understand it one bit. Best and most practical answer will win. PLEASE help me. Thanks to anyone willing to donate a minute of their time to help me.
